More About Bright Start - The Educational Support Programme

Bright Start is an Education Support Programme and registered non-profit making section 21 company based in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.

Objective: "to offer previously disadvantaged children a 'brighter future', by placing them in prominent local schools with proven excellent educational standards. The programme provides ongoing support and guidance through its school career to ensure the child reaches its full potential".

Founded in July 2008, the organisation runs a unique and dedicated programme.

Bright Start secures places for under-privileged children (identified and evaluated by the Bright Start Program) in good fee paying schools and then obtains sponsors to finance their education.

The Education Support Programme provides ongoing support and guidance throughout the school career to assist the child in achieving its full potential.

The cost of running the programme is funded by the founders, who volunteer their time and resources to run the organisation. This is because the founders believe that 100% of the donor's funds should reach the child.

Bright Start has an active fundraising team who raise additional funds for the children's peripheral needs such as uniforms, birthday parties, sports, etc.

The project is based in Hout Bay, which is a racially diverse suburb outside Cape Town. It consists of Black, White and Coloured communities. There are a range of public and private schools available in Hout Bay from nursery to grade 12 (age 18 - Matric).

The founders of the organisation are Sally Whitford and Libby Moore. The programme was initiated based on success of under privaledged children they have personally sponsored through private education.

The founders hope that if the programme continues to be successful, the model can be expanded to other suburbs and communities.

We currently have 12 children placed in private schools, 6 of which still require sponsorship for school fees beginning 2009. We hope to be able to offer places for another 8 children in the following year.

The essence of the Education Support Programme is comprised of 3 areas, Child Selection, Sponsors and Support.
