About The St. Leger Retirement Hotel and Homes
The St. Leger echoes with grand old parties and good life. Yet, behind the grand exterior, a thoroughly modern environment has been created in luxurious style, providing gracious, (independent or assisted) living for those who are growing elderly.
Designed in 1899 Number 20, Beach Road, known as 'Sandhills' was built by Sir Herbert Baker as his personal beach house. It is unique because this is the only dwelling the Baker built for himself in the Cape. It was sold to the Governor General of the Cape, Sir Patrick Duncan. It is currently being considered as a provincial Heritage site.
The other buildings were designed shortly after the turn of the century by Herbert Baker and soon after being built, two were bought by Albert Victor Lindbergh, the founder of CNA and the Sunday Times. He married Gladys St Leger, the grand daughter of the "Old Saint", the founder of the Cape Times, York St Leger, Gladys St Leger Lindbergh made Crawford Lea her family home.
The Joan St Leger Lindbergh Arts foundation was created by their daughter Joan whose greatest dream was to have a center of musical and artistic excellence. The Foundation will continue to operate from Swanbourne, (number 18 Beach Rd). actively promoting the arts, staging exhibitions, music performances, poetry rteadings and functions.
Joan consolidated the block of Baker houses into an architectural unity in 1995 when she bought Sandhills and Swanbourne and set about restoring each building to its former glory.
This endeavour has been taken over by the new owners and brought to life once again in the design of The St. Leger Retirement Hotel. The end result will be the rejuvenation of the striking faƧ ade which will grace the Muizenberg beachfront.
Owners of the apartments at The St. Leger will enjoy the timeless elegance of an environment that embodies a natural artistic heritage and a historic relevance that is extremely rare._
