AFRICAN MARITIME SERVICES (AMS) was formed by partners Alf Wallace and Rob Whitehead in 1995. Their vision – to provide a professionally focused service to the commercial trawling industry of Southern Africa by offering superior quality equipment and modern trawl designs.
The company now has large factories and warehouses conveniently located adjacent to the harbours of Cape Town and Walvis Bay. Long term, exclusive relationships have been entered into with the following respected, international gear manufacturers:
* BRIDON – the leading British manufacturer of trawl warp and general steel wire ropes. AMS holds stock of the following wires in Walvis Bay and Cape Town:
- "MARBLUE ®" 6X19 FFC and IWRC steel wire ropes
- "DYFORM ®" 6X26 FFC and IWRC steel wire ropes
- "DYFORM ®" STARFISH 6X26 FFC and IWRC steel wire ropes
* CASTRO – Supplier of trawl, purse and longline floats produced in their Spanish factory from high impact-resistant plastics. A wide range of trawl float sizes and depth ratings are available – from 135mm (5") to 300mm (12") diameter and workable at depths of up to 3,000 meters.
* EURONETE – One of the largest manufacturers of trawl netting in the world supplying a wide range of superior quality netting and twines from their factories in Oporto, Portugal. Among the products stocked by AMS are:
- Polyethylene (PE) products – PE; Euroline ®; Euroline ® Premium; Euroline ® Premium Plus.
- Polyester (PES) and Polyester/Polyethylene (PE/PES) blended materials.
Nylon and Euroneema (Dyneema) products are also available.
* MORGERE – Manufactures a range of trawl doors suitable for every type of trawling. These popular doors have proven themselves over many years in the Southern African region with their balance of fuel efficiency, rugged construction and performance. Among the doors supplied by AMS are:
- The TURBO ® range of bottom trawl doors comprising of the classic Polyvalent Oval, Polyvalent R-type and Star WS models.
- The OVALFOIL slotted version of the famous Polyvalent Oval with its superior fuel saving capability.
- The POLYFOIL slotted, horizontal door offering superior spread and fuel efficiency for bottom trawling.
- The WV and WX high aspect ratio V curved doors for bottom and midwater trawling. The tried and proven WV door is now complemented by the WX version which is fitted with foil to improve fuel efficiency.
* PARSONS – Super hardened "TRAWLEX ®" Grade 95/100 Profile chains and components are designed specifically for the commercial fishing industry. They were developed with the aid of experienced trawler men and fully tested in sea-going research. It has proven to be the most versatile and cost-effective method of rigging trawl gear.
* ULTRA CROSS ® - Knotless netting maximizes material strength in every direction while eliminating bulky knots that can slip, abrade, foul gear and damage delicate fish. Mesh size remains uniform with no material elongation. *
* MARKUSSENS - Supplier of "The Blue Line" range of marine hardware.
In addition to the materials described above AMS manufactures and stocks a comprehensive range of European-manufactured quality commercial fishing hardware to supplement the company’s trawl repair operations. Examples of these items are:
* High tensile steel D and Bow trawl shackles each stamped with a Safe Working Load and with a safety factor of 5:1.
* High tensile steel G-hooks; Recess Links; Swivels and combinations of these components all designed with a safety factor of 5xSWL.
* General hardware – e.g. Steel Banded Bobbins (up to 24" in diameter); Splicing spikes & fids; Bulldog grips; Hooks (Yo-Yo, Gilson, Universal ect.); Kelly’s Eyes and Stoppers; Netting needles; Steel thimbles.
* Combination wire ropes and 4-strand or 6-strand Malletas.
* Steel blocks including Towing, Snatch and Tackle blocks.
* Rubber discs and heavy duty Rockhopper discs from 3" to 24" diameter as well as solid/spoked rubber spherical and bunt bobbins.
* Specialised trawl equipment – e.g. Wallace & Cooper bearing swivels and repair kits; SORTEX separator grids; Osprey riser floats._
